Some Magic Things Are Happening at Music Spaces Around the World

When Emmy Nominated actress Christina Hendricks (Mad Men, Drive, Toy Story 4…) announced she was DJing April 1st at Part Time Lover in San Diego, recently named one of America’s Best Bars by Esquire Magazine, everyone thought it was a joke at first. Hah, April Fools, right?! Well, she had played there before, sampling an eclectic mix of “Shoe Pop Dream Gaze”, a blend of shoegaze, dream pop, and atmospheric indie music. She also did identify as a punk/goth earlier in her life (pictured above)… Hmm.

Maybe it wasn’t a joke after all!? We did our best to have a backup plan just in case, but headed down to San Diego and hoped for something wonderful. What followed was one of the craziest nights in listening bar history.

A few hundred people long line stretched out the door, and tunes were blasting by the time we got in. Yep, there she was, in all her fashionable analogue vinyl DJ glory. Not only was she playing some amazing color vinyl records, but she was dancing along and mouthing almost all the words! She knew her stuff! We’ll have a setlist below, but we heard: Cocteau Twins, The Stone Roses, Beach House, St. Vincent, Lana Del Rey, Sky Ferreira and more. The Mad Men veteran got down to some amazing tunes!

With her husband George Bianchini by her side, she boogied, spun, and enjoyed a full 4 hour set, much to the adoration and clamor of fans. There should be approximately 1000 videos on social media in the next few days of this. Did we mention it was all FREE by the way!?

Vinyl record sales recently hit $1 billion last year (more on that here), and FREE events like this just furthers the fact that you should be getting into physical media. Again, Part Time Lover is one of the best bars in America, full of Reel-to-Reel, Klipschorns, a full record store (open until MIDNIGHT), and there are tons of other vinyl shops (Amoeba), event spaces (CAT CAFES IN JAPAN FOR THUNDERCAT’S NEW ALBUM), and wild, weird, incredible spaces for you to enjoy all things sound.

We’ll have another article on Part Time Lover later, because it’s quickly becoming our favorite spaces to hangout at. People like Christina just solidify this.
